Radio has been a hobby of mine for a long time. Although people have moved on to Internet and other type of digital media, radio is still a viable way to get intel. Storms, Infrastructure issues, etc… I would recommend a small portable radio with the following features:

As far as two-way radio go, I would say CB would be the way to go. Keeping things simple and cheap. One for the car/truck, one for the home stead.
