Survive/Homeless
If you get tossed by life into homelessness, it is a good idea to have some knowledge. So even if you don’t think you would end up homeless, I would recommend that you watch the videos and think about what you would do and need. I have been there, and it came out of the blue. If you have a hundred bucks stashed in your wallet or someplace that you would not spend it (or a gold ring or something of value), you have more than enough to start over.
You can get cloths and a backpack at a thrift store, and possible gear as well. One can make a lot of kit as well, if you improvise. You should keep these on your phone, as well as a selection of books (KJ Bible #1), music, etc… Just in case!
You need to put some time in thinking about your EDC (every day carry), as life happens, and if that is all you have to start over or survive, do you have what you need and know how to use it?
What I would carry if I could acquire it):
It is important to travel light. Living in the woods, but spending time in the city, you have to be flexible, but you do not want too much to carry, or garner attention.
EDC (Every Day Cary)
Always carry on your person:
- Pocket knife: I carry a Swiss Army knife with a saw blade. Attached to it is fingernail clippers, via a little metal chain. They come with tooth pic and tweezers, this is you basic grooming kit.
- Comb: I keep my hair (what little I have left) very short, but have a long beard.
- Fire steal: Fire is very important.
- Change purse: Can be used to hold tender when needed.
- Long life flashlight: Mine will last 600 hours on low setting.
- Mini Bic: Quick fire and spark source.
- Eye glass cleaner: I use readers.
- Bandana: So many uses.
- Analog Watch with compass clip on: Keep time, use as a backup compass, check pulse rate.
- Gold ring: Emergency money, known the world over.
- Keys: Mini pry bar (very handy), Mini key tool
- Wallet: Data backup of my system on Micro SD, Fresnel lens, $100 just in case. Contact written on card
- Cain: Makes a good weapon that you can take any place, also fishing poll, holding up tarp, etc…
Pack
- Bible and some way to keep it water proof (gallon Ziploc bags)
- Metal mug or Stanley cook set if you can get it, empty can on the cheep.

- Para cord: or any cordage you can get
- Canteen (water bottle if on the cheap)
- Spork
- Stainless pie pan (for plate, and/or cooking on)
- Water filter (not required, but a big plus)
- Garden trowel and TP.
- Sling shot with extra bands
Bedroll everything rolled in to blanket, with belts or para cord tied
- Blanket: Wool if you can get it
- Tarp for outer layer with cords for tying down
- Extra pair of pants
- 2 shirts
- 3 under ware
- 3 socks
- hat
- 2 belts

- Sea Salt: Food flavor and mineral support.

- Vicks: bug repellent, sore muscles, foot balm, and more
Food/Supplies
- Canned meats, foil meats, dried meats (jerky)
- Parched corn, trail mix without candy in it
- The fishing kit and sling shoot will provide food, while in the woods. If you are able to still buy food, then do so.
- Buy REAL food, not processed. Potatoes, onions, meat, etc.. Eggs last without frig, so does Coconut Oil (and it has a lot of uses).
- Bisquick (bannock), flower and salt to make hard tack (last years, see recipes).
Tips
- You want to setup a location but always keep your gear ready to run if need be. Never stay unpacked, just pull what you need when you need it so you can move out quickly and not leave anything behind.
- Know local water source, but do not setup next to it. 5 to 10 minutes away is best. Keeps bugs down, and water will draw people and animals.
- Locate pine trees, they are a good source of fat wood, food, and medicine. You should be drinking pine needle tea often to stay healthy.
- Never cook at your comp location as it leaves a sent. Best to stop, cook, then eat while on the move.
- Never make large fires or fire with smoke. A Dakota fire is easy to setup. Can’s make good hobo stoves. Alcohol is best if you have it, especially in urban environments.
- Don’t defecate by camp, always cover you waste. (dig a spot 6" or more)
- Learn to identify 5 edible plants that are common
- Learn all you can about pine trees, they are a life saver and are everyplace.
- Wild lettuce is a powerful pain killer, learn how to use it.
- Never leave a trace, keep a low profile as much as possible. If you have to leave trash, bury it, don’t burn it.
- Learn to make charcoal: used for cooking, medicine, and fire starting
- When you can get seeds, plant gorilla gardens, you can come back and harvest. Even if you can’t others can find it.
The Hobo Ethical Code
- Decide your own life; don’t let another person run or rule you.
- When in town, always respect the local law and officials, and try to be a gentleman at all times.
- Don’t take advantage of someone who is in a vulnerable situation, locals or other hobos.
- Always try to find work, even if temporary, and always seek out jobs nobody wants. By doing so you not only help a business along, but ensure employment should you return to that town again.
- When no employment is available, make your own work by using your added talents at crafts.
- Do not allow yourself to become a stupid drunk and set a bad example for locals’ treatment of other hobos.
- When jungling in town, respect handouts, do not wear them out, another hobo will be coming along who will need them as badly, if not worse than you.
- Always respect nature, do not leave garbage where you are jungling.
- If in a community jungle, always pitch in and help.
- Try to stay clean, and boil up wherever possible.
- When traveling, ride your train respectfully, take no personal chances, cause no problems with the operating crew or host railroad, act like an extra crew member.
- Do not cause problems in a train yard, another hobo will be coming along who will need passage through that yard.
- Do not allow other hobos to molest children; expose all molesters to authorities…they are the worst garbage to infest any society.
- Help all runaway children, and try to induce them to return home.
- Help your fellow hobos whenever and wherever needed, you may need their help someday.
Simplified HOBO code:
- Keep a Clean Camp
- Leave No Trace
- Do No Damage
- Make No Disturbance
- Don’t Poop Where You Eat
