The eleven senses

Some people say there are only five senses; this is not true, there are actually eleven. You can also actually use all of these senses with your writing. The first five are known by everybody, the rest are not exactly obvious but well worth being aware about:

  1. Sight is the easiest to deal with. A character can see the universe around them. “Sarah noticed the perfect ivory orb.”
  2. Hearing is the next one. This is also quite easy to deal with. “The orb hummed with a low tone.”
  3. Smell gets somewhat more difficult. How do you describe what something smells like? “It smelled like a grass field after rain.” Smell also plays an important role in taste.
  4. Taste is a fun one. This requires contact with your tongue. NOTE: foods also have texture. “The orb tasted like chocolate, with a slimy texture.” There are five tastes: sweet, sour, bitter, umami, salty.
  5. Touch relates to the texture of the material. Is the material smooth or rough? “The orb was smooth like a billiard ball.”
  6. Thermosense is the sense of temperature. Does something burn (NOTE: something can burn from both heat and cold(!)). “The orb radiated a teeth clattering cold around it.”
  7. Vestibular system is one of two ways which helps you with maintaining balance. The first is seeing the horizon (whether visible or not; your brain will figure out where it is), the second is… well… this one. It’s in your inner ear and runs based on gravity. “Sarah felt like down was not where it was supposed to be, she bent over and emptied her stomach on the floor.”
  8. Nociception: Pain is its own sense. “The orb stinged her!”
  9. Proprioception is the sense of where the various parts of the body are. “Sarah could not touch her nose when she had her eyes closed.”
  10. Interoception is everything going on inside of your body. Hunger, the need to pee, the urge to vomit, and awareness of the heart doing its job are all part of this. “Sarah’s heart was beating from concern over her own well being.”
  11. Intuition is a sense that many doubts exist. It’s that gut feeling of something “wrong” with a particular situation, or that voice in your head telling you to take the left turn where you usually drive straight on. “Sarah smiled at the doktor, ‘I have a feeling everything will be okay in the end.’”
